Paine College is a private Historically Black college located in Augusta, which is a consolidated city in the U.S. state of Georgia, with a population approximated at a number of more than 195 00 inhabitants (during the 2008 census), after the city merged with Richmond County, in 1996, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in the state and the 2nd metro-area, after Atlanta, as well as the 113th largest city in the U.S. Besides being home to Paine College, Augusta is internationally known for the fact that it hosts The Masters golf tournament each spring, and for the fact that it is the hometown of funk/soul singer James Brown.
Paine College was established in 1882, being founded by the leadership of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, now United Methodist Church, and the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, now Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, being the brainchild of Bishop Lucius Henry Holsey, who first expressed the idea of its founding in 1869.
Paine College's athletic teams are known as the Lions, who compete in NCAA Division II and SIAC, in all the traditional college sports, for men and women. Their distinctive colors are purple and white.
